the dream

I had a dream today.

I was with a group of people, walking along a sidewalk. It was a sunny day with a few clouds, and I remember the trees and the shadows they cast over us. The road felt somehow familiar.

We were all a little tipsy, and everyone was happy. I had the feeling that we were all friends from somewhere, heading somewhere together.

We walked up a hill, turned right, and kept going.

Then we arrived.

It was some kind of cafe. We went inside and gathered in a room, everyone talking with drinks in their hands. I was standing with a small group of people, talking and enjoying myself.

Some time later, we left and went to another place, somewhere you needed a ticket to enter.

While my friend was buying the tickets, I noticed a girl sitting there alone.

I walked over and started talking to her. I can't remember what I said, but I remember wanting to compliment her nose. I asked whether she'd had an operation because it looked so cute.

She smiled and said no, but she seemed pleased by the compliment.

I sat beside her and put my hand on her lap. She panicked a little and said her boyfriend could show up at any moment. Still, she didn't pull away, and she seemed to enjoy my company.

I had the feeling she was about to say something maybe give me her number.

Then I woke up, my body aching and my nose blocked.

Now, I don't have that many friends these days. I've never really been someone who enjoys being part of a group. I don't go out very often, and even when I do, I rarely enjoy it that much.

I don't know anyone with a particularly cute nose, either. There's no one I've been thinking about lately, no one I've been wanting to compliment.

But after that dream, I felt something I hadn't felt in quite some time.

I felt lighter.

There was a kind of quiet, sweet joy inside me, as though something good had actually happened.

Maybe it was the painkillers.

But for a little while after waking up, I missed a place I had never been,

people I had never known,

and a girl whose face I could barely remember.
